5 Year UK Guarantee Citizen watches are guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship for five years (UK only). This guarantee covers the watch Internationally for one year.
Atomic See 'Radio Controlled'
BAR/ATM Water resistance is measured in BAR's or ATM's when the watch is in a static (motionless) state. One BAR or ATM is equivalent to the pressure at 10 metres under water. One thing to keep in mind is that we live at 1 atmosphere of pressure. This means that when a watch is water resistant to 3 "BAR or ATM", it is water resistant to 20 metres under water, not 30 metres as many people believe.
Bracelet Any metal type strap on a watch. May also include 'expander' type bracelets.
Eco-Drive A watch that never needs a battery. Citizen Eco-Drive technology harnesses the power of light - from any natural or artificial light source - and converts it into energy which is stored in a permanently rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It recharges continuously in any kind of light to run forever. The power reserve stated for each watch is once fully charged.
Fly-Back A chronograph that, when reset, rapidly moves anti-clockwise back to the 12 O'clock position. The hand moves so rapidly it is seen to 'Fly-Back' in contrast with other chronograph watches that advance (clockwise) more slowly to their original position.
Low Charge Warning Eco-Drive watches are fitted with a function that activates if the watch is insufficiently charged. On models fitted with no second hand the minute hand will in normal use move in increments of 15 seconds. When the low charge warning is activated the minute hand will move in 1 minute intervals. On models fitted with a second hand the second hand will move in increments of 2 seconds. Should this happen the watch will continue to tell the correct time but should as soon as possible be exposed to light (direct sunlight preferably) in order to charge the cell.
Perpetual Calendar Automatically adjusts for odd and even months and leap years through to 2100
Promaster Promaster watches undergo rigorous safety tests and fulfil the stringent quality standards on water and shock resistance, visibility and strap strength, as determined by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO 6425).
PVD Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) is a vaporisation coating technique, involving transfer of material on an atomic level. It is an alternative process to electroplating. The process is similar to chemical vapour deposition (CVD) except that the raw materials/precursors, i.e. the material that is going to be deposited, such as gold, silver or palladium, starts out in solid form, whereas in CVD, the precursors are introduced to the reaction chamber in the gaseous state. The process results in a hardwearing coating on the underlying metal which benefits from improved hardness and wear resistance and improved oxidation resistance.
Radio Controlled Radio controlled watches recieve a time signal from a radio transmitter tuned to a caesium or 'Atomic Clock'. The atomic clock is the standard measure of time: the electron resonance frequency of the Caesium 133 atom is 9,192,631,770 cycles per second which is measured to give a time accurate to greater than +/- 1 second per million years. The transmitter signal is picked up by the watch and sets the time and date automatically.
Solar Panel The Eco-Drive watch uses a microns thin disc of amorphous Silicon under the dial to convert light energy into electrical energy through the photovoltaic process. The electrical energy is then stored in a special energy storage cell . The charging is done in a more efficient manner than was ever before thought possible. Because of this newly developed technology, it is now practical to use a wide variety of attractive dials.
Stiletto Ultra thin 4.3mm, the thinnest light powered watches in the world.
Strap Any watch band other than metal. May include leather, rubber (resin), canvas, kevlar, fabric and patent leather
Water Resistance See Also 'BAR/ATM'
Non Water Resistant With non water resistant watches caution should be taken not to expose the watch to moisture. There is no indication of water resistance on the caseback.
Water Resistant The watch will be protected from water or moisture in normal daily activities (i.e. rain, accidental splashing etc.) These water resistant watches are indicated with "WR" stamped on the caseback.
50 Metre Water Resistant (WR50) The watch will be protected from water or moisture in normal daily activities (i.e. rain, accidental splashing etc.) and also suitable for use in swimming pools. These water resistant watches are indicated with "WR50" or "WR 5 bar" stamped on the dial and/or caseback.
100/200 Metre Water Resistant (WR100/200 or 10/20 bar) These watches will be protected during water related activities and sports inc. swimming and snorkelling. On 100/200m water resistant "WR100/200" or "WR 10/20 bar" is stamped on the dial and/or caseback.
DIVERS 200/300 Metre Water Resistant (WR200/20 or WR300/30 bar) The watch will be protected during recreational scuba diving activities. The case is stronger to guard against the entrance of moisture at extreme pressures. On DIVERS watches, the word "Divers" is marked on the dial and/or caesback.
